Jordan Crooks has qualified for the 100 metre freestyle semi-finals at the Olympic Games after a splendid swim in heat 10, to begin competition for team Cayman in Paris.
Crooks, 22, posted a time of 48.01 in his debut swim during the mega event on Tuesday, 30 July at the Paris La Defense Arena which seeded him as the fifth fastest qualifier heading into the semis.
Crooks, who holds a personal best of 47.71 in the 100m free will return to the pool later today for the semi-finals, scheduled for 1:30pm Cayman time.
Jack Alexy, of the US, was the fastest qualifier in the heats in 47.57.
“It was all right for my first swim, could be better but you know, small details to clean up,” Crooks said after his race, noting that he is looking to sharpen those details heading into his next race.
“Just the middle 50 [metres] of the race, that approach off the wall and leaving the wall, just needs to be more a little more aggressive and then just putting my head down and fighting for the finish.”
The nation’s glee and pride continued later that morning when his younger sister Jillian Crooks took to the pool for her second Olympic Games.
“This race was a learning experience and I’m very glad that I was able to get up and go and race for my country,” Crooks said. “Once again, have fun with it, and it’s just a race.”
Jillian, 18, stopped the clock at 56.15 – .97 off her personal best – in heat two of the 100m free. Her time did not qualify her for the next round.
Beyond his semi-finals, Jordan is slated for the 50m heats on 1 Aug.
