Katlen Bush and Ethan Jeffers took their love of books and libraries to the next level by tying the knot at the old George Town Public Library, becoming the first couple to marry at the iconic location.

The literature lovers first met and became friends as students at the University College of the Cayman Islands 10 years ago.

After their first date at the Cayman Islands National Museum, that was filled with much laughter and fun, “I knew she was the one,” Jeffers told the Cayman Compass.

The two got engaged in January this year at their favourite restaurant, Casanova, and soon after began to plan their 20 July wedding.

“I attended the library’s Summer Reading Challenge ceremony and was in awe of the historic charm and new renovations,” Bush told the Compass.

Located in the heart of George Town, the old Public Library moved into its dedicated home in 1939. It was designed by Captain Rayal Bodden to evoke Cayman’s maritime heritage and shipbuilding tradition.

The pair shares a love for Caymanian heritage and architecture, “so the wooden ceiling fashioned after a ship’s hull, was especially captivating,” Bush said, affirming her decision to book her wedding at the iconic location.

She added it was the windows and all-natural lighting that were “uniquely charming”.

The library underwent a facelift and expansion in 2009, adding a children’s area and access to public computers. Renovations to the historic library building maintained the character of Cayman’s history and culture.

“They hold other events, so we followed the booking protocol. It was much more affordable than other venues. The library closes half day to the public on Saturdays, so we were able to have our intimate ceremony in the evening,” Bush said.

Library-inspired nuptials

Officiated by Pastor Kim Evans, the couple said “I do” in the old library, surrounded by loved ones.

Of that moment, Bush said, “We felt such peace and joy.”

Before that, the couple had their ‘first touch’ – instead of a ‘first look’ – upstairs in the new library building, surrounded by books.

Kevin Goring, acting director of the Public Library Service, said of the nuptials, “It was an honour for the historic library to be selected as the venue for this momentous occasion, and we are thrilled to be a part of their special day.”

Bush said it was an “honour” to be the first wedding the library staff has accommodated.

As a book blogger, published poet, and teacher, Bush said she understands the importance of public libraries and librarians.

“Access to books, internet, knowledge, and communal space is essential for the flourishing of our children and community. We are delighted to show love to our local library.

“We give glory to God for inspiring our love and protecting us through all the storms of life. It was a dream come true and beautiful beginning to this new chapter in our love story,” Bush said.
