Cayman sailor Matheo Capasso finished strong at the ILCA US National Championship, held in Newport Beach, California, from 9-11 Aug.
After completing eight races, Capasso placed sixth overall out of 30 sailors in the ILCA 7 regatta – the Olympic-sized laser for men.
It was the first time Capasso has competed in the largest of the laser sailing rigs and his performance showed great promise, as he took second in race five.
Capasso, a junior at Tulane University and the team captain of his Division I team, initially placed top five overall but was penalised two points upon the conclusion of the event, which he did not challenge.
He will continue racing in the ILCA 7 rig this season with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA championships in November.
