Coldwell Banker Cayman Islands Realty owner and co-founder of the Cayman Islands Real Estate Brokers Association JC Calhoun passed away on Sunday.
Calhoun, a Caymanian citizen who was born in New York, was as well known in Cayman for his philanthropic endeavours as for his real estate business, having been involved in Rotary, Cayman Islands Little League, YMCA and others.
CIREBA issued a statement on Calhoun’s passing on Sunday evening, saying the association was deeply saddened by his death.
It noted that Calhoun first arrived in Cayman in 1979 when he began working for Bob Soto at his diving company. In 1980, Calhoun started his real estate career working for Cayman’s first national hero, Jim Bodden, at J.M. Bodden & Son. He subsequently formed Cayman Islands Realty, which later became Coldwell Banker Cayman Islands Realty, in 1985. In 1987, he co-founded CIREBA.
“Throughout his 44-year real estate career in the Cayman Islands, JC served as President of CIREBA three times and played a key role on successive boards, remaining an active member since 1987,” the association said.
Calhoun also held the position of president of the Coldwell Banker Master Franchise for the
Caribbean and Atlantic Islands.
“JC’s extensive contributions and pioneering spirit have been instrumental in shaping the industry’s growth and success,” CIREBA noted in its statement. “His unwavering commitment to excellence has left an indelible mark on the real estate sector, significantly contributing to its development in the region.
“JC was highly respected by his colleagues at CIREBA and set the gold standard of expertise and professionalism for all in our industry to follow.”
In addition to his professional achievements, Calhoun was “profoundly dedicated to the Cayman Islands community”, the statement continued, noting that he was a proud choir member of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in West Bay, and played an active role in numerous youth-oriented organisations, including the YMCA and the Cayman Islands Little League.
“JC’s passion for community service and youth development was evident in his extensive volunteer work and contributions, underscoring his values and commitment to community advancement,” CIREBA stated, as it extended its condolences to Calhoun’s family and “all who had the privilege of knowing him”.
