The thunderous sound of three US Army Chinook choppers were heard over Grand Cayman on Thursday morning, attracting curious onlookers near the Owen Roberts International Airport.
The helicopters, which landed here on Wednesday afternoon, overnighted at the airport during a brief stopover, the Governor’s Office confirmed to the Cayman Compass.
“They are just in transit here and left at around 9am,” the Governor’s Office said.
The three military helicopters are part of the Joint Task Force-Bravo unit that “routinely train and exercise in the region to improve their readiness for any humanitarian assistance and contingency response”, the Governor’s Office said.
The Joint Task Force-Bravo homepage states that the unit is a “subordinate command” of US Southern Command, responsible for a Joint Operations Area that encompasses Central America.
“Our focus is strengthening partnerships, maintaining personal readiness, and integrating JTF-Bravo capabilities with our partner nations. This focus enables combined operations to effectively counter regional threats, build our partners’ capacity, and quickly respond to humanitarian assistance/disaster relief contingencies,” its profile states.

Cayman routinely hosts US miliary helicopters here for refuelling as they conduct operations within the Caribbean region.
Earlier this year, five US military helicopters that flew over Grand Cayman created a stir as many took to social media to flag sightings.
The choppers, which included two heavy-lift Chinooks and three Black Hawks, overnighted at the airport before heading to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
