Jordan Crooks, who captivated Cayman several months ago at the Olympics, was back competing on the world stage and turning heads after touching the wall a blink away from a world record in his 100-metre free heat at the World Aquatics Championships.

Crooks, 22, finished with a time of 44.95 seconds – a new championship record and .11 off the world record.

The Caymanian Olympic finalist will enter the semi-final later today as top seed with the best time of the heats, and the always unassuming Crooks will no doubt be looking to build on that performance with an eye to the record books.

Also competing on Wednesday, was his sister Jillian Crooks and Kyra Rabess. Crooks, 18, who has grown up on the biggest sporting stages, delivered yet another best swim, finishing her 100m free heat in a time of 54.13 seconds – a new national record.

Rabess, 20, returned to action, having competed in the 400m free heats yesterday, in the 800m free heat, winning in 8:46.13 – a new national record.

Kyra Rabess begins world championship campaign with national record

Rabess did not move on to the semi-finals, and thus closed out her world championship campaign, but she has a lot to be proud of with her record-breaking effort.

Crooks will return to action on Saturday, alongside her brother – both will be competing in 50m free heats, for what should be excitement to say the least.

The women’s heats will begin at 3:50am Cayman time and the men’s at 4:15am.
