When it comes the next wave of swimming talent that could follow in the footsteps of Caymanians Jordan Crooks and the Fraser brothers Shaun and Brett, look no further than those currently competing abroad.

They are several swimmers surging up the ranks at their schools, separating themselves from the pack while holding Cayman’s flag high.

Danny Kish

For Cayman’s swimming prospects, 2025 has begun with wins, records and honours, and Danny Kish is no exception. The Seven Mile Swimmers protégé has been making a name for himself at Brighton College in the UK and recently picked up several wins in record time at the Tom Handley Open Meet (short course).

Kish swam to a podium place in personal best times in every event he took part in. In the 50-metre butterfly he swam 25.04 seconds to win and set a new 15-17 Cayman national record. Kish then went on to claim a personal best in the 200m fly with a time of 2:12.87.

He completed the freestyle triple in the 50m, 100m and 200m sprints, finishing on the podium for all events with times of 24.16, 53.28 and 2:02.65, respectively.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Cayman’s two-time world champion Crooks continues to blast his competition out of the water, swimming for the University of Tennessee.

Crooks dominated the field at regular-season finale at Duke over the weekend, winning all three of his individual events as well as all three relays he competed in.

The weekend before, he excelled at the Tennessee swimming and diving Senior Day meet against the Georgia Bulldogs at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

Crooks placed first in the 50m free, clocking 18.44. In the 200m medley relay, he joined teammates Lamar Taylor, Kevin Houseman and Gui Caribe to notch the fourth-fastest time in their school history, in a time of 1:21.90 with Crooks posting a 17.66 split for his 50m free anchor.

Kyra Rabess did her part for the Northern Colorado Bears, though they came up short against the Colorado State Rams in a dual meet.

Rabess set the tone with a dominant swim in the 1,000-yard free, with a time of 10:26.70 – 12 seconds ahead of second place.

The Northern Colorado sophomore, who has been recognised as a scholar athlete for excellence in the classroom, swam the 500-yd free next, placing second in a time of 5:05.19.

Fellow Caymanian distance swimmer Harper Barrowman, who is a freshman at Drexel University, also competed in the 1,000-yd free during a meet against Towson University.

She won that event in a time of 10:27.77, before going on to win the 500-yd free in 5:02.12. She then touched the wall at 1:55.15 in the 200-yd free, good enough for a third-place finish.

Barrowman, with teammates Audrey Le-Nguyen, Hannah Charters, and Emma Pillich, capped off the meet with the 400-yd free relay, taking second place with a time of 3:35.59.
