Key Discussions and Panels

The forum will feature a series of dynamic presentations and panel discussions designed to address critical areas impacting the Cayman Islands:

Building a Future-Ready Workforce: Pilar Bush will moderate a panel discussion on the current state of workforce development and outline some of the views from members and the community about what is required to prepare students and job seekers to enter the future workforce. What do jobs of the future look like, and are our islands doing enough to prepare students for them? Are we falling behind, and is the development of a National Human Capital Plan the essential tool that will assist our Islands in building a future-ready workforce?

Sustaining Economic Success in Tourism: Chamber Councillor Tammi Sulliman will moderate a panel discussion on shaping the future of tourism in the Cayman Islands. The tourism panel will explore the current state of Grand Cayman’s tourism sector, focusing on critical challenges and opportunities that will shape its growth over the next decade. One pressing issue is beach erosion along the iconic Seven Mile Beach, a key attraction whose degradation threatens the island’s appeal to visitors. Addressing this challenge will require innovative strategies to preserve the beach’s natural beauty while maintaining tourist accessibility.

Additionally, the panel will delve into the debate surrounding the proposed cruise berth facility. While the facility could boost cruise tourism and generate economic benefits, concerns about environmental impacts, particularly on coral reefs and marine ecosystems, have sparked controversy. Panelists will examine whether this infrastructure aligns with sustainable tourism principles and if it supports the island’s long-term vision.

The session will also highlight the need for a comprehensive tourism plan to ensure balanced, sustainable growth. Such a plan could provide a roadmap to address environmental, economic, and social impacts, fostering resilience in a competitive global market. Attendees will learn how these decisions—on beach conservation, cruise tourism, and strategic planning—can secure Grand Cayman’s status as a premier destination while protecting its unique environment for future generations. The minimum wage will also be addressed.

Sustaining Economic Success in Financial Services: Cayman Finance CEO Steve McIntosh will present “The Rise and Rise of the Cayman Islands Financial Services Sector.” The talk will address the key challenges in the sector, specifically government services and talent.

Government Accountability: Marla Dukharan will lead a discussion with the Deputy Governor, Hon. Franz Manderson. She will provide details of a case study used in Jamaica to support more significant government accountability.

Enhancing Quality of Life Through Health Care: Shomari Scott, Health City’s Chief Business Development Officer, will lead a critical discussion on rising healthcare costs and access to health insurance. Panelists will explore solutions to enhance affordability and coverage for Cayman residents.

The forum will also feature TED-style talks and opportunities for audience engagement, fostering a collaborative environment for idea exchange and solution-building.

Keynote Address: Staying Competitive in a Changing World

The forum’s highlight will be Marla Dukharan’s keynote address. She will share her expertise on the global economic outlook and its implications for the Cayman Islands. Her presentation will focus on practical steps for fostering innovation, diversifying the economy, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and investing in education and infrastructure to ensure long-term competitiveness.
