Two orcas, also known as killer whales, were spotted off the North West Point of Grand Cayman over the Discovery Day weekend.
“I have seen them in this area several times now,” said Curtis Eldemire, who spotted the whales.

He also reported whale sightings in 2023 and 2024 near the same deep, offshore pinnacle, located several miles to the west of Grand Cayman.
“I have recorded the sightings on my global positioning system, and something appears to be drawing them to this area,” he said.
In September last year, Eldemire was also among several boaters who saw a large adult sperm whale with a calf, also off the North West Point of Grand Cayman. At the time, Eldemire suggested they may be feeding on giant squid.
“Each whale eats about one ton of squid per day, and I recall some time ago, Jon Jon Arch found a huge squid on the surface of the water that had clearly been bitten by something very large. I think they must be feeding on giant squid in the Cayman Trench,” he said.
The water was very calm over the long weekend, so it would have been easier than usual to see activity on the sea surface, even in the deep-sea environment around the Cayman Islands.
