The Breast Cancer Foundation has announced that pioneering Brazilian rugby player Raquel Kochhann will be the keynote speaker at its annual gala this year.

Kochhann, a three-time Olympian and breast cancer survivor, will be the special guest at the gala, which will be held on 4 Oct. at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

As well as representing Brazil in international rugby, Kochhann, 32, is a “passionate advocate for women’s health and empowerment”, the Breast Cancer Foundation noted in a press release announcing her appearance at the gala.

In 2022, at the age of 30, amid her thriving rugby career, Kochhann was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a preventive bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy, pausing her career to focus on recovery.

She returned to rugby and is currently a member of the Brazil XV’s first-ever Rugby World Squad.

“Raquel’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection, community support and unbreakable spirit,” said Beverly Edgington of the Breast Cancer Foundation. “Her voice and her presence at our gala will be an incredible inspiration to all who attend.”

‘Kick Breast Cancer into Touch’

Following her keynote address at the gala, Kochhann will also participate in an exclusive ‘Kick Breast Cancer into Touch’ breakfast the next day, co-hosted by Cayman Women’s Rugby. This “intimate” event, to be held at the Grand Cayman Marriott Resort, will bring together members of the local rugby and breast cancer communities, with proceeds benefiting both the Breast Cancer Foundation and Cayman Women’s Rugby.

The press release noted that this partnership underscores the importance of collaboration across sectors to promote education, dispel myths – such as the false belief that chest impacts cause breast cancer – and reach broader audiences through sport and storytelling.

“Raquel’s story is one of perseverance, passion, and purpose,” said Mercedes Foy, manager of Cayman Women’s Rugby and former England-capped player. “We’re thrilled to welcome her to Cayman and work together to raise awareness and funds for causes close to our hearts.”

The 2025 Breast Cancer Foundation Gala is already sold out, but to purchase tickets for the Kick Breast Cancer into Touch breakfast, go to the foundation’s website.
