During his first official visit to the Cayman Islands, Stephen Doughty, the UK minister of state for Europe, North America and the Overseas Territories in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stopped by Parliament on 22 Sept.
Accompanied by Governor Jane Owen, Doughty, who was in Cayman from 21-23 Sept., was received by Speaker Ezzard Miller, Deputy Clerk Twila Escalante and Deputy Chief Officer Melissa Ebanks, and then given a tour of the chamber by Serjeant-at-Arms Kim Evans.
“It was a privilege and honour to host Minister Doughty in our Parliament and to have an intellectual and informed discussion with him regarding the functions of Parliament in the Cayman Islands,” Miller said.
“It was also a pleasure to host Her Excellency the Governor, who accompanied him on his visit to Parliament. The discourse was both stimulating and informative, as well as respectful.”
Doughty also met Leader of the Opposition Joey Hew, who said, “We were pleased to host Minister Doughty and to share insights into the work of our Parliament and the official opposition. Visits such as these reaffirm the importance of continued collaboration and understanding between the United Kingdom and the Cayman Islands.”
Doughty’s visit focused on the UK’s partnership with Cayman and the future development of the relationship, underscoring the strong ties that exist.
At a press conference on 22 Sept., he responded to questions about the biggest security threats facing the Cayman Islands, the implementation of a beneficial ownership register and the UK’s support of marine conservation initiatives. He called the Cayman Islands “a treasured and important part of the British family”.
