A man believed to be a visitor to the Cayman Islands has died after he was hit by a vehicle on West Bay Road on Saturday, 18 Oct.

He was the second pedestrian killed in the last two months crossing West Bay Road. On 12 Sept., 37-year-old resident Paulo Pillas died when he was run over attempting to cross the road near Palm Heights, less than a mile from where the latest incident occurred. Another pedestrian was seriously injured in that incident and the driver of the truck that hit them was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving.

According to police, Saturday’s incident occurred just after 9:10pm, near Piper Way, close to the Hampton by Hilton hotel and Coconut Joe’s Bar and Grill. Emergency services were dispatched after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road.

An off-duty senior police officer, who happened to be in the area, helped the injured man until paramedics arrived. The victim was taken by ambulance to Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, a woman, appeared to have suffered a medical emergency at the time of the crash. She was also transported to the hospital for treatment.

This is the third fatal collision in the Cayman Islands since early September. In addition to the two involving pedestrians on West Bay Road, another occurred on Cayman Brac and involved a single vehicle.

Police closed a section of West Bay Road to conduct an investigation, diverting traffic through Lawrence Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. Local access was permitted where possible.
