CayMAS Carnival has launched the Back2Basic Initiative to honour Ricardo ‘DJ Back 2 Basic’ Gomez, who passed away on 30 Oct. 2025.
In a press release, CayMAS said that Gomez died after a courageous battle with cancer, adding, that he devoted over 30 years to the Soca and carnival community, contributing significantly to CayMAS events and bringing joy, unity and energy to celebrations across the islands.
The Back2Basic Initiative was created to address a growing need for sustainable support systems for Cayman Islands residents facing significant medical and financial hardship – something Gomez experienced firsthand, said the release.

Through this new programme, registered Cayman Islands Non-Profit Organisations will be granted expanded opportunities to participate in CayMAS Carnival which includes, receiving a 100% waiver of all CayMAS entry fees and leading the 2026 CayMAS carnival parade.
Non-profits will also be eligible for assistance with costume design, procurement and logistics. They will be allowed up to 500 participants in their section and will have to maintain a minimum participation fee of $75 per person.
Interested organisations will be required to submit a valid Cayman Islands Non-Profit Organisation registration certificate to be eligible for the initiative.
