A front-page photo in the 27 Nov. 1975 edition of The Caymanian Compass showed then governor Thomas Russell lighting the kiln after the opening ceremonies for the Cayman Festival of the Arts. Linberg Eden, who built the lime kiln, stepped behind the governor at an inopportune moment so he could not be seen in the photo.
The beef controversy continued from the report in the previous week’s Compass about government allowing meat and cattle from Swan Island to come into Cayman, with members of the Legislative Assembly debating the issue during a budget session. Willie Farrington, MLA from West Bay, criticised the move, saying diseases like hoof and mouth could “spread rapidly and wipe out a country’s cattle population”. As part of his reply to members’ comments, Warren Conolly, ExCo member for agriculture, said the government’s decision to allow people to take their livestock out of Swan Island was reasonable, without posing any danger to cattle in Cayman.
The editorial that week devoted one section to an article about a pharmacist, who had been working at the hospital for more than 25 years, suffering “a serious fall” which required surgery in Jamaica. She had slipped on water in a poorly lit corridor that had leaked through a faulty roof which had been in disrepair for more than a year. Calling the accident “a shame”, the editorial added that it was a “disgrace” that the hazard existed for that long before anything was done. That a worker had to suffer a disabling mishap and be rushed unaccompanied under sedation to Jamaica “in order to persuade the hospital to make the necessary roof repairs [was] preposterous and gruesomely unfortunate”, it said, and hoped that all other similar “disorders” at the hospital would be promptly treated and cured.
And, finally, a photo on page 7 celebrated Country and Western Night at the Galleon Beach Hotel, where Dexter Bodden received his trophy from Barbara Evans, previous winner of the event. Also pictured were Austin Bothwell, Andy Martin, Boris Frederick, Cardinall DaCosta and Graham Thompson.
