The three-day Cayman Captive Forum, which will see more than 1,550 attendees discuss the insurance industry, began on Tuesday, 2 Dec.

Held at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, the forum is the biggest business conference on the island and the largest captive insurance conference in the world.

“For the captive insurance industry, it’s more than just a typical conference,” said Kevin Poole, general manager of the Insurance Managers Association of Cayman, which organises the conference.

“Captive companies based here need to hold board meetings in Cayman, so the forum is the ideal time for them to do that. It’s also a useful way for them to connect with CIMA [Cayman Islands Monetary Authority – which regulates the insurance industry in the islands]. We have a dedicated room, where attendees can book a meeting with CIMA.”

Speakers and social events

With 90 speakers there is also a strong content line-up. Local figures, such as Wayne Panton, the parliamentary secretary for financial services, and Steve McIntosh, the CEO of Cayman Finance, will pitch Cayman’s attributes as a global insurance centre to international attendees.

As expected, there are a wide range of speakers from international insurance companies and professional service firms. But there are also some more eclectic talks, including one from Chris Lemmons, a diver whose dramatic underwater survival story inspired the film, Last Breath.

It’s not just the speaker lineup that is varied; the forum also has a combination of social events away from the conference hall.

“We mix it up every year. Last year we introduced a pickleball tournament for the first time and this year we are holding events in different locations across the islands,” said Poole.

Now in its 32nd year, approximately 80% of the forum’s attendees are international visitors, whose stay gives a big boost to Cayman’s tourist offering.
