A 66-year-old man alleged to have pretended to be a doctor multiple times to buy controlled drugs has appeared in court.

Ismael Isaac Perez Maceo was charged in Summary Court with impersonating a doctor and buying controlled drugs.

Magistrate Philippa McFarlane said in court on Tuesday, 9 June, that the charge the defendant faced was a “fine only” offence.

The case against Maceo, who was represented in court by Prathna Bodden, assisted by a Spanish interpreter, was adjourned until 30 June and he was released on bail.

Police said earlier that the arrest was the result of a six-month investigation sparked by allegations that an employee of a medical services company had bought prescription drugs, including controlled substances.

Officers also carried out a search of a vehicle said to be driven by Maceo, which is alleged to have “recovered documents relevant to the investigation”.
