The United States has issued a worldwide caution advising Americans to exercise increased vigilance while travelling or living overseas, warning that heightened tensions in the Middle East could create security risks for US citizens and interests around the world.
In the advisory, issued on 18 July, the US Department of State said the security environment remains “complex” and could deteriorate rapidly.
“Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation,” the department said.
Although the advisory focuses largely on the Middle East, it urges US citizens everywhere to remain alert, noting that threats could extend well beyond the region.
The advisory was issued a day after two US service members were killed in Jordan in an attack the United States attributed to Iran-backed forces.
The warning also comes as tensions escalate following renewed US strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance, air defence, missile and drone facilities, prompting Iran to vow retaliation.
The State Department warned that US diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have previously been targeted and said groups supportive of Iran could target other US interests or locations associated with the United States and Americans globally.
Americans in Cayman
Cayman is home to a sizeable American community. According to the Economics and Statistics Office’s 2024 Compendium of Statistics, 843 US citizens hold work permits in Cayman, while the 2021 Census recorded 2,655 Caymanians with dual US citizenship. The census also found that 3,597 residents were born in the United States, which generally confers US citizenship at birth.
While the United States does not maintain an embassy in the Cayman Islands, American citizens can obtain limited assistance through the US Consular Agency in George Town. Full diplomatic and consular services are provided by the US Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica.
US embassies and consular facilities in Cayman and elsewhere in the Caribbean have not historically been among the diplomatic missions targeted during periods of heightened geopolitical tension. Nevertheless, the State Department said Americans worldwide should remain vigilant as security conditions evolve.
The department also cautioned that ongoing military activity could result in commercial flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures, leading to travel disruptions.
It advised Americans abroad to monitor local news, follow security alerts issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate and enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program or STEP, which allows US embassies to send emergency alerts and contact citizens during crises, follow the ‘US Department of State – Security Updates for US Citizens’ channel on WhatsApp as well as @TravelGov on X.
The advisory also encourages travellers to review destination-specific travel advisories before travel.
