Cayman's new constitutional changes will take effect on 3 Dec., the day before the formal state opening of Parliament and its first sitting, the Premier's Office has announced.
Although Cayman Islands Premier Alden McLaughlin did lobby British Prime Minister Theresa May last week about changing the governing relationship between Cayman and the U.K., the premier said this week that his proposals should not be taken as “a first step toward independence.”
Alric Lindsay has lived in Cayman since he was a child and was adopted by a Caymanian man. His business is here, as is his home, as is pretty much his entire life. However, Mr. Lindsay found himself facing a legal challenge to his ability to run for political office earlier this year.
A Grand Court ruling issued this week will likely make it easier for political candidates who are born outside the Cayman Islands to stand for election, regardless of the number of days they have been absent from the jurisdiction before candidate nomination day.
