Hurricane Eta is now a Category 2 storm as it moves inland over northeastern Nicaragua but forecasters continue to warn the "dangerous" system could cause "life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic winds and flash flooding in portions of Central America".

Hurricane Eta, one of the most powerful storms to hit Central America in years, pummelled Nicaragua on Tuesday in an impoverished region of its Caribbean coast, battering homes and infrastructure and threatening deadly floods.

Nicaragua on Monday scrambled to evacuate citizens from its Atlantic coast or put them in shelters as Hurricane Eta barrelled closer, while the US National Hurricane Center warned of flash floods and "catastrophic winds" in Central America.
