Appealing to Rajan

Shanti, left, and Rajeshwari, women who go by one name and live near the Bay of Bengal, make an offering of milk to Hindu God of the sea, Samadru Rajan. The women performed the ritual in the hope that Samadru Rajan would never return as a tsunami. Marina Beach in Madras is the second longest beach in the world and before the tsunami was an important gathering place for people living in the crowded, noisy city. Photo: AP
