The Cayman Islands Government will recognize rescue workers, civic-minded private sector businesses, individuals, and civil servants for their tireless dedication to the hurricane recovery effort this Saturday at a special awards ceremony to be held at Pedro St. James.
The Cayman Islands Community Spirit Awards hosted by the Leader of Government Business, McKeeva Bush, was developed to recognize those who worked tirelessly, and often with disregard for self, during and after the storm to help get Cayman back up on its feet.
‘As we enter the restoration phase of our recovery efforts, I feel strongly that we need to pause to acknowledge and thank the many persons and agencies who contributed either time, or funds, or both in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan. Thus far, we have experienced a remarkable rate of recovery. This would not have been possible without the strong community spirit which is so evident in these Islands,’ explained Mr. Bush.
Two types of awards will be presented – an Outstanding Dedication Award for service above and beyond the call of duty, and a Community Spirit Award for notable contributions to national recovery efforts.
‘While we can’t thank everyone, I hope these awards will go some way towards acknowledging those who made a difference,’ said Mr. Bush.
A silent auction will also be held at the event to raise funds for the Cayman Islands Government Housing Recovery Fund. Auction items will include vacation getaways inclusive of airfare and accommodations; a Westin Casuarina Resort package for two including accommodations, Sunday brunch and a couples massage at the Hibiscus Spa; a weekend stay at Cobalt Coast; gym memberships; appliances from A L Thompson; jewellery from Island Companies; dinners at Cayman’s leading restaurants and much more.
All guests are encouraged to bring their cheque books with them and to be ready to donate toward Cayman’s housing recovery.
‘The evening promises to be a memorable occasion. I want to thank the private sector and our national airline for once again stepping up to the plate to aid national recovery,’ added Mr. Bush. ‘As well as the awards presentation, guests can look forward to dinner, live entertainment and, of course, the exciting auction.’
