Runner raises $2,000 for Pines

Derek Larner, running on behalf of The Pines Retirement Home, raised more than CI$2,000 on Sunday in the AT&T Cingular Cayman Islands half-marathon.

Despite injuries, Mr. Larner, Security and Inventory Manager for the Treasure Island Resort, completed the 13-mile race in 1:53:38.

Mr. Larner a regular runner, arrived in Cayman one week before Ivan. He said he wanted to raise funds for charity, both to aid recovery efforts and to provide incentive to continue his training.

‘I wanted to challenge myself,’ he said. ‘If I’m going to run the race than I might as well raise money for an organization.

‘A few people mentioned the needs of The Pines to me and it seemed like a very worthy cause. Hopefully, the money that was raised can buy some equipment for The Pines’, he said.

Mr. Larner thanked those who pledged their support, particularly colleagues at Treasure Island Resort.

The Pines’ board of directors, staff and residents expressed their gratitude to Mr. Larner for his kindness and support.
