Exactly 221 days after the passage of Hurricane Ivan, a crowd of fine-art and fine-food enthusiasts gathered at The Brasserie restaurant to enjoy the talent of Caymanian artist, Wray Banker.
Diners were given descriptions of the various pieces of art that Mr. Banker had produced for the exhibit.
Mr. Banker described the paintings and informed his audience of the intimate details of each piece and of his inspiration for selecting the titles.
The Brasserie staff had planned to host an October, 2004, food wine and art evening with Wray. However, the hurricane changed things.
‘Now that everyone has had a chance to breathe after the passage of Ivan, it was felt that I would be the perfect choice to do the first food, wine and art evening at The Brasserie, since Ivan,’ he said.
Mr. Banker’s Big Eyed Guys series, which was the feature of the 21 April evening, highlighted his ability to use his art to inject an element of humor into serious issues.
Mr. Banker hoped that his approach would help the people of the Cayman Islands see that even in most serious moments; there is humor to be found.
The exhibition was titled 221A.I – 221 days after Ivan
‘The title of the show is a result of listening and talking to people about storm-related experiences, and noting how we were all dating them by x number of days after or before the hurricane,’ he said.
The pieces in this exhibit are for sale, and Wray says he is accepting requests for commissions from anyone wanting individual Ivan experiences paintings, or anything else.
The proceeds of the sales will go toward the Wray Hurricane Relief Fund, and the exhibit is open to the public during restaurant opening hours.
