It was a time to pay homage to the past while building bridges to the future as the Cayman Brac Museum pulled out all the stops to stage its first-ever International Museum Day Family Fun Fair.
Designed to celebrate the island’s rich cultural heritage, Saturday’s festivities attracted around 450 people for a day of fun and fellowship.
‘We had a fantastic turn-out,’ said Museum Supervisor Wanda Tatum. ‘It really went well.’
International Museum Day, which has been celebrated around the world since 1977, provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the various roles museums play. This year’s theme, Museums Bridging Cultures, pays tribute to cultural diversity.
Along with free tours of the museum – including such new exhibits as the refurbished old jail and Alva Tibbetts’ catboat – visitors enjoyed an array of events spanning from an International Flag Parade and Little Miss contest to craft displays, games and live entertainment.
Visitors also had a chance to sample a smorgasbord of local food including turtle, whelks, conch, curried chicken and saltbeef.
Merideth Dilbert and Chesley ‘Bully’ Brown entertained the crowd with old time kitchen dances backed by musicians Paula Scott, Valda Watson and Los Tropicanos.
