Families urged to bond

Fun, family-building activities – from favourite board games to jigsaw puzzles – are in the plans for families throughout the Cayman Islands on Saturday evenings during May (International Child Month).

The National Youth Commission has designated each Saturday evening this month as ‘Family Night’.

Families are therefore encouraged to spend special time together each weekend participating in wholesome recreation, according to a GIS press release.

Other examples of family-friendly activities are enacting scenes from favourite movies or plays, sharing music, or designing a ‘family tree’ together.

The Youth Commission states that spending more time with children helps parents to learn more about their views on life, while positively influencing their day-to-day decisions.

Debates on recent events in the community or school also provide invaluable insights into a child’s thoughts, while encouraging them to speak their minds, and showing that the child’s opinions are valuable.

Such positive reinforcement is proven to decrease a range of youth problems, from drug use and teen pregnancy to negative peer pressure.
