Time to change Cuban policy

Considering the Government’s policy regarding Cuban refugees, I can’t but wonder what our Government is thinking about.

Again a boat load of refugees halted by Cayman Brac asking only for water to drink on their journey and again it was refused. I consider refusal to give water to people in need a most deplorable act.

I wonder if refusing to give these poor sufferers water may be the reason we are experiencing the worst drought on record.

Rather than let the poor unfortunate humans have a little water, food and fuel altogether costing about $100 per group and let them go about their business, the Government is detaining them, housing and feeding them for six or eight weeks and forcibly repatriating them to Cuba against their will and at great cost.

I would suggest that the Government has spent more than $100,000 carrying out this policy during the last year without any remuneration from Cuba. Does that make good sense?

The present policy not only lacks economic soundness, but shows lack of consideration for other human beings and absolute disregard for God’s word, which says that we should even give our enemies water; that we should treat others as we would like to be treated; that whatsoever a man soweth, he shall also reap; and the Lord Jesus said ‘Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it to me.’

It is time to realize that the present policy is wrong in the sight of God and of men who have a sense of compassion.

I therefore call on our Government to do away with the policy of refusing assistance to the Cuban refugees and to stop classing them as illegal immigrants.

They are poor, unfortunate people needing a little help to go on their way in their search for freedom and a chance to improve their lives.
