Debris processing site closed

The hurricane debris-processing site at Frank Sound is closed pending renewal of MC Restoration’s contract.

MC Restoration has reached its limit according to its agreement with government. The company has collected and hauled hurricane debris in excess of 300,000 cubic yards. The contract was awarded to the Florida-based debris removal firm in November following Hurricane Ivan’s September passage.

The processing plant closed in the second week of this month because MC Restoration had reached its limit in debris collection and processing, according to its $10.7 million government contract.

David Moffit of MC Restoration said the company would be willing to renew the contract.

Mr. Moffit said the company had a good experience working with good local contractors in Grand Cayman and it would certainly be willing to continue working here.

‘We used many local contractors that proved to be a great asset to us, something that some of the other bidders may not have done,’ he said.

It is now a matter of whether the new government extends the contract, he said.

Mr. Moffit estimated there could probably be an additional 200,000 to 300,000 cubic yards of debris to collect, much of which comprises dead trees and vegetation.

Mr. Moffit said the original contract allowed for an extension and the company should hear some news in a couple of weeks.

Mr. Moffit said if the contract were extended through the pick-up yards being doubled then it could amount to a cost of $5 million or $6 million, or the contract may only be extended for the purpose of MC specialising in processing.

He also said the single processing site at Frank Sound had well its role as a central location for the island’s debris, allowing elimination of temporary sites.

MC Restoration is still working on car collection, preparing and processing them for demolition and final disposal.
