Jamaican singer/performer I-Wayne is being touted as one of the hottest of Reggae’s rising stars.
Reggae fans in Cayman can hear I-Wayne in a live concert at the Community College auditorium (behind the Truman Bodden Sports Complex) tonight (Friday).
Known both for his cutting social commentary and his sometimes salacious lyrics, Clifford ‘I-Wayne’ Taylor’s career is now ascending.
A December, 2004, article in the on-line version of the Jamaica Observer says that the 25-year-old singing sensation’s hit song, Can’t Satisfy Her, spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Mega Jamz Top 10 Reggae/Singers chart.
The song, says the Observer, eventually topped the Reggae charts of London, New York and South Florida.
I-Wayne is said to have a unique voice and singing style, plus a unique way of composing and storing his lyrics.
According to another Observer article of July, 2004, I-Wayne commits all of his lyrics to memory.
The Observer quotes the singer as saying:
‘Ah nuh pen style, its jus a natural way whe me store inna me head weh me see dem a gwaan wid.”
Before his mega hit, Can’t Satisfy Her a ballad about the life of a fictional stripper/prostitute, (‘Stripperella’) I-Wayne’s previous releases, including Living in Love and Burning Red were moderately successful in his native Jamaica.
However, these two and a few others have been getting a lot of international attention as a result of the success of Can’t Satisfy Her.
Can’t Satisfy Her is hard core social commentary, disguised as salacity.
According to the promoter of tonight’s show, the audience will be coming to hear Can’t Satisfy Her, but a lot of other good I-Wayne tunes never heard in Cayman will be served up.
Also appearing will be Ali-B, Bragga Don, Ragga Escobar and Tricia Riley, along with Java Disco’s Rebel-T.
Tickets are $20 if you buy them at One & Only Boutique, Quick Cash, Funky Tang, Reflections or J&M Electronics.
They cost $25 at the gate, which opens at 8pm.
The concert is being sponsored by Quick Cash, Rebel-T and One & Only Boutique, and is being promoted by businessman, Fitzroy Solomon.
