Women of Grace honour senior ladies

An event in praise of mothers saw senior ladies from George Town and West Bay honoured through song, poems, prayer and a brunch on Saturday morning and afternoon.

Organised by the Women of Grace group, the brunch was one of three annual events the group of friends holds to honour what member Claudia Welds described as the stalwarts of society.

The event was held at the Family Life Centre on Walkers Road from 11am to 1pm.

Sponsored by Cayman National Corporation (this year and last year), the day-time affair featured prayers, poems, singing by Timika Johnson and both drumming and singing by 96-year-old Julia Hydes.

The foot tapping and singing was proof that age shouldn’t stop you making music and having fun. The singing worked up a good appetite for the ladies who were treated to a fine brunch following the music.

‘These are ladies that have set such a fine example for all of us and I hope that when the younger generation look back at those in my era, that they can say the same thing,’ said Ms Welds.

A special mother honoured at the event was Mary Smith of West Bay. She was spoken of fondly by her friend Veta Ebanks, also of West Bay, before being presented with a fruit basket by Francia Lloyd.

The event originated many years ago in West Bay, but has grown to include senior ladies from George Town.

Women of Grace hold an annual thanksgiving tea at the Pines Retirement Home and distribute Christmas baskets each year to senior ladies in both West Bay and George Town.
