Government needs leaders

Pease allow me to respond to Mr. Thompson’s letter of 12 May, 2005.

In his apparent summary of business ventures that were supported by the UDP, notwithstanding the environmental havoc and adverse impact on the quality of life for the majority of Caymanians they will have, it appears that he has failed to mention the Trolley Roger.

The previous government should be given credit for supporting this supposed attraction as well.

It should be noted that this Trolley Roger fiasco is a clear example of how not to run a country.

When a government is not controlled by a leader, but by a follower who follows any developer’s or business person’s idea with a view to profit, the general public in Cayman will suffer.

They will find themselves in situations where they are sitting in a snaking line of traffic unable to get to an appointment on time or pick their kid up from school simply because they are stuck behind the Trolley Roger.

Now, yes, it must be admitted that this business makes sense for the business owner, but what about the hundreds of people whose lives are impacted in a negative way as a result of this scheme?

How could any responsible government agree to such an idea?

The Cayman Islands will always be an easy target to be exploited for material gain, our government needs to learn to draw a line in the sand and say ‘this far and no farther’.

It is to be hoped that our new government exhibits better leadership skills in this regard rather than simply being a follower like the previous one.
