Otis Air Conditioning rallied from an early 7-3 deficit to defeat the Le Bleu Drinkers 19-11 in co-ed softball action at the Field of Dreams on Monday.
Le Bleu, 7-2, trying to prime themselves for the play-offs, suffered their worst loss of the year.
‘They treated us like ugly stepsisters,’ said J.B. Lovinggood after the game.
After taking the early second-inning lead, the Drinkers’ bats fell silent, and their defence took a nap.
‘We played like it was our first game of the season,’ said coach Alan Markoff. ‘Maybe it was because it was our first night game of the season.’
A late-season schedule change has given the Drinkers a tough stretch where they have to play three games in fewer than six days.
On Monday, the team looked like it might not make it through the entire first game of that stretch, as it fell apart badly in the last inning.
Excuses ranged from the mosquitoes to the Miami Heat losing to heat on the field.
‘Man, was it muggy out there,’ said Drinker Pat Haag. ‘I could have filled a swimming pool with my perspiration.’
‘Yuk,’ said catcher Laine Smyth. ‘Why not fill it with ultra-pure Le Bleu water and we’d all jump in.’
Perhaps the defensive highlight of the game for Le Bleu was the spectacular play on a hard line-drive turned in by second baseman Priscilla Miller.
‘I’ve always said she had great hands,’ said first baseman Richard Maragh.
‘I can’t even feel my hand,’ said Miller afterwards.
Mark Wallace, who re-cently finally came clean on taking vitamin B supplements in the off season, responded with his worst game of the year.
He took the loss particularly hard, refusing to speak to reporters after the game.
‘I think I’ll have to start a rumour saying he drinks Slim Fast mixed with Red Bull and Ensure,’ said Coach Markoff. ‘He seems to play better when he’s at the centre of controversy.’
Stephen Ebanks put the loss in perspective: ‘Two losses aren’t that bad,’ he said. ‘At least we haven’t lost all.
