Widmer wins Caribbean junior title

The Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships came to an end last Thursday at the Guavaberry Golf & Country Club in the Dominican Republic. The conditions of play were exceedingly difficult due to tropical storm Dennis’s wind and rain.

In the absence of lightening, play must continue with the competitors playing through the tropical downpours and 50mph winds.

Despite the conditions, Cayman’s Samantha Widmer coasted to a five stroke victory over Diana Torry from Trinidad and Tobago to take the girls 16-18 division with a score of 237.

Johnny Widmer fired a 75 on the last round of 13-15 boys division and took the second place trophy for Cayman.

In the 12 & under boys, Shehzad Hafiz played very well but unfortunately his teammate, Jack Widmer, had to withdraw in the final round after taking an injury to the face by a golf ball.

Team manager Bob Slatter was very pleased with the results from the team who were competing against eight other very competitive countries. Samantha and Johnny will head off to St.Kitts in August to compete in the Amateur Championships.
