Jessica Bodden is a local celebrity. When you live in Cayman, it comes with the territory.

‘In Cayman, everybody knows who you are,’ said the 23-year-old entrepreneur. ‘Everyone down here is a local celebrity.’
It’s part of what makes this tiny Caribbean island unique and that’s the whole idea behind Ms Bodden’s latest business venture – a line of T-shirts sporting Cayman-inspired sayings.
‘It plays to real life in Cayman,’ said Ms Bodden, who launched the online business, Another Random Creation, with partner Nick Nowak, last month.
The shirts – some humorous, some educational and others just fun – capture what makes Cayman one-of-a-kind, she said.
‘There’s nothing else like it down here.’
Printed in Cayman, the T-shirts celebrate local culture with such sayings as ‘South Sound Girls Rock’, ‘Once You Go Brac, You’ll Never Go Back’ and ‘My Heritage Day Is Better Than Yours’, a nod to the rivalry between districts during the Pirates Week Heritage Day celebrations.
One shirt sports the slogan Smoke Pot on the front – with an explanation on the back that it’s an old Caymanian saying for the paint cans that were filled with plant debris and lit on fire to ward off mosquitoes.
‘You learn a piece of Cayman of history just by reading the shirt.’
Ms Bodden, who is a graphic artist in addition to running a number of businesses including a management property company, designed the shirts herself. There are around 30 designs, with more in the wings.
For now, the T-shirts can only be ordered online – www.arc.ky – but Ms Bodden says plans are in the works to make them available at local retailers. They sell for CI$25 each or CI$20 each if you buy two or more.
She also plans to expand to include shorts, pants, bags and hats.
‘The response has been overwhelming and so positive,’ she said.
Another Random Creation is teaming up with local radio stations to promote the clothing line. On Tuesday, they’ll be at Aqua Beach with Spin 94.9 and on 24 October with X107, also at Aqua Beach.
