Type II diabetes results from a condition in which the body does not properly use or produce insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar and starches into energy. There are several risk factors including obesity, smoking, lack of physical activity, high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol.
Diabetes is a rising health concern around the world and is associated with severe medical conditions. The complications of this disease include increased risk of heart attack and stroke, kidney disease/kidney failure, eye problems and in many cases blindness and nerve damage in arms, hands, legs or feet, which can lead to limb amputation.
Registration begins at 8am on Saturday. Due to space limitations, reservations are encouraged. Call Darlene Whitaker (Cayman Island Health Services) 244-2814; Dr. Eugene Foley 946-4944; Silvia Perry, 928-6240 or Lucy Martir, 925-6382 of the Diabetes Association.
