Port, travel and supermarkets to return to normal

Business at the port, supermarkets and travel scheduling was set to start returning to normal on Grand Cayman yesterday and today following widespread disruptions brought about by rough seas caused by Hurricane Wilma.

Shoppers and supermarkets were anxiously awaiting cargo loads to get into port, as the week-long delay in ships getting in and unloading had caused supermarkets to run out of fresh produce and milk.

Yesterday, as waves had subsided, the Port Authority set about re-paving the cargo dock at the back of the port and it hoped to re-open for cargo yesterday or today, depending on how long the paving took to complete.

‘We can’t operate a forklift in that area until the paving is complete. It’s tentative,’ commented the Port Authority’s Port Facility Security Officer Joseph Woods. He said the port would re-open to cargo as soon as it was practical to accommodate it, but this was expected to be by today, all going well.

The Port Authority was also preparing to accommodate two cruise ships today, Carnival Conquest and Holiday Dream, along with one on Friday, Carnival Miracle.

Cayman Airways Miami flights were back on schedule yesterday following cancellations brought about by Hurricane Wilma.

Miami International airport reopened on Tuesday, with flights resuming later in the day after 5pm.

Hurricane damage closed it and other Florida airports, cancelling hundreds of flights from Monday.

Cayman Airways is advising passengers that they should confirm any onward connections with other airlines prior to travel. Miami-Dade is under a curfew, hotel stock is limited and most businesses are non-operational due to lack of power.

Passengers who wish to travel should contact Cayman Airways Reservations at 949-2311, their local travel agent or visit the Cayman Airways website at www.caymanairways.com.
