In Sunday’s action at the Eastern avenue court the Wendy’s Lady Heels defeated Welly’s Cool Spot 54 – 38 to capture their first win of the season.
Led by point guard Mesha Gordon’s 17 point, 6 rebound, 5 steal performance, the Lady Heels came back from a 10-0 deficit in the first quarter to take the lead and would not look back.
With Dionne O’Garro injured, Benieca Thompson and Kamilla Nagy had to step up their games.
Nagy had 9 rebounds and 10 points while Thompson had a stellar 13 point, 21 rebound performance.
Sobeida Hawkins recorded her first double-double of the league with 10 points and 10 rebounds;
For Welly’s Ms Cassianne Lawrence led all players with 17 points and 7 rebounds.
In the featured game of the night WestTel Straight Shooters had to pull a rabbit out of the hat to escape an upset from Financial Integrated Services.
FIS applied suffocating defensive pressure the entire game and focused on taking WestTel star Eva Aiken out of the game.
With four fouls in the second quarter, Aiken had to sit on the bench and FIS capitalized by reducing a 10 point lead to only 2; But WestTel’s Rachelle Peterson and Robyn Joe stepped up and carried their team on their shoulders; Cindy Loadman was unstoppable in the paint and scored 29 points and was 9 of 11 from the free-throw line to lead all scorers for FIS.
Merta Day showed why she’s still one of the best in the business by grabbing 18 rebounds and 5 steals to go along with her 10 points.
In the dying seconds of the match FIS had the ball with only 30 seconds to go and a 6 second difference on the shot clock. But inexperience caused them to take an ill-advised shot too soon and when Rachelle Peterson grabbed her 15th rebound for the game she found Aiken at the other end of the floor and scored the basket with one second remaining to take the victory!
It was definitely the most exciting game of the season thus far and fans are expecting even more great games to come. Eva Aiken led WestTel scorers with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks and Robyn Joe scored 13 points and had 4 steals.
Final score of second game was 56-55 in favor of WestTel
