As 9 year-old Hayleigh Smith was being photographed with older sister Teagan, a fellow competitor, she was heard giggling. Asked why she said ‘I just love swimming’.
There was plenty of fun at the Lions Pool thanks to the KPMG Swim Meet. |
It was that kind of day as KPMG sponsored its second Get Back in the Water meet with a short and fast sprint meet following on from last year’s burner. From the youngest 6 year-old to the oldest 26-year old, Adrian Sava, everyone enjoyed the thrill of racing.
For Oceanna McMillan-Ord and Allie Bacon, this was a big day as they each completed their first 25 metre races. Allie had tried the backstroke earlier and hadn’t been able to finish, so when she touched at the end of her freestyle race, it was smiles all round. Cristen Jones completed her first 50 metre races and was very tired and happy at the end. It brought to mind former Head Coach Kelsheimer’s quote about what an act of courage it is for a six-year old to step up in front of all those people and look down the lane to the finish so far away.
For Adrian, a Romanian watersports instructor at the Ritz-Carlton, it clearly wasn’t his first meet as he won every senior race. Seiji Groome won all his races and Geoffrey Butler won 4 out of 5 while achieving personal best times (PBs) in all his events. Danielle Boothe went one better by doing the ‘double’ of all PBs and winning all her races.
Other swimmers to post all PBs were Isabella Rooney, Lara Butler, Iain McCallum and Amanda Shum
The day was also used as an opportunity to attempt to swim qualifying times for CARIFTA competition in specially staged time trials. Alexa Robertson (200 back) and Carolina Watler (100Breast) successfully passed that milestone.
Members of the swimming community thanked KPMG, who in addition to auditing the Stingray accounts pro bono for many years stepped in again to sponsor this event, and to Progressive Distribution for once again providing the refreshments.
KPMG partner Jennifer Frizzelle was on hand to make the presentations but also to catch some of the action and thoroughly enjoyed herself.
The next SSC event is a four-day meet on March 2-5, when another great turnout is anticipated. To join or find out more about the Club, call the secretary on 547-7390, talk to any Board member or visit our website at www.caymanswimming.com (email: [email protected]). Full results of this and all Cayman swimming events are posted on the website, as are entry forms and swimming news.
After such a wonderful day at the pool, Cayman Swimming was rocked by the tragic death of Sonia Foster. Stingray Swim Club sends its deepest sympathy to husband Peter and her two daughters Jodie and Janelle.
