Please allow me to add my two cents in regards to this gay cruise ship issue. I honestly think we need to get our priorities in order.
In just one day alone, I received three emails from residents warning me about various robberies on this island. The crimes that we should be concerning ourselves with are happening right here on a daily basis and it’s gotten to the point where you cannot even leave your car windows open when you are driving for fear of someone reaching in and stealing your bag.
What exactly is the government afraid of anyway? Do they expect gay people to come ashore and have sex on the streets? Are the ministers who oppose this that infantile in their thinking? Are these the same ministers who I am sure have a member of their own that is or might be gay? If one of their own came out of the closet are they going to be ostracised simply because of their sexual preference?
Ministers, please also keep in mind that some of the people who vote you into office are gay people. I am sure things would change here and laws would be forthcoming if all gay people who reside on this island (and there are many) both local and non-local stood up and made themselves known and demand that this island stop treating them like second class citizens.
I am ashamed to see this happening on my island, and I will be even more ashamed when the headlines are read around the world that Cayman is still living in the dark ages.
Gay people are citizens of this planet and have the right to travel anywhere in the world they choose without fear of being treated like they are serial killers. It’s a known fact that not all gay people choose the lifestyle; the majority are born gay and their sexual orientation is genetic and encoded in their DNA from inception, just like some people are born short, tall, skinny or with red hair as opposed to being blonde.
The UK has passed a law allowing same sex couples to marry via a civil union. Cayman better listen and learn and stop allowing certain people who always hide their ignorance behind the bible, to dictate to them how to run/ruin this country.
This is the same bible, by the way, that depicted Mary Magdalene as a prostitute (and we all know better, don’t we?). Please people, let’s stop ignorance and intolerance and if we really want to pick up an issue that’s worthwhile then I say start by not allowing real criminals to roam free in Cayman and leave gay cruises alone and let these people enjoy our islands. Human rights are for all humans.
Cayman, stop sleeping, rise up and smell the coffee.
