Barbados galloped away with the number-one spot in the first leg of the Caribbean Equestrian Association 2006 Junior Show Jumping Competition.
Held at the Cayman Islands Equestrian Centre, the reecent two-day event saw Cayman take second place and Trinidad come in third.
On Sunday the event continued with the parade of countries. Escorting the teams onto the course was Paul Rivers riding Fancy Shiner western style and holding the Cayman flag.
At the competition, riders from each country were required to ride horses chosen from a lottery.
This exciting format had the dual benefit of allowing the riders an opportunity to demonstrate their riding ability, while eliminating the expense of shipping horses around the region.
Riding for Barbados under the guidance of coach Di Clarke, were Adrina King and Kyle Holder in the 16 and under class; and Emily Kinch, 12 and under.
Cayman was represented by Jamie-Lauren McTaggart and Alexander Harvey in the under 16; and Bianca Alberga and Marina Maffessanti in under 12, coached by Mary McTaggart.
Trinidad, coached by Patrice Tollmeyer was represented by Christina Rostant and Garry in the under sixteen and in the 12 and under Sandhya Moll.
Horses in the competition were Iggy Pop, Monroe Kar, Apache, Trigger, Fame, Rambo, Karma and Monsieur who was withdrawn for misbehaving.
The Cayman Islands Equestrian Federation hosted the first leg of the competition which allows riders to compete at the regional level.
The second leg for Cayman takes place in Antigua in July with the third and final leg in Jamaica. At the end of the competition in November, one of the five countries represented-Cayman, Trinidad. Bermuda, Antigua or Jamaica will emerge the overall winner.
