Today’s Editorial February 21: Leadership award important

Hats off to members of the Young Caymanian Leadership Award nominations subcommittee.

They’ve completed a most difficult task of weeding through the qualifications of 19 nominees for the coveted award to come up with five finalists.

It is impressive that a record number of young men and women were nominated this year.

The five who received the nod to proceed to the 11 March gala where the winner will be named should all stand proud. Indeed, just being nominated is an honour in itself.

To get into the top five, Jeana Ebanks, Pearlina McGaw, Kyle McLean, Rayle Roberts and Jonathan Tibbetts had to demonstrate some admirable qualities.

First, they were scored on their personalities, including their ability to adequately communicate, and their image.

Then they had to prove their skills at leadership in all facets of life – personal, professional and spiritual.

Community involvement came next and they had to point out any voluntary service or participation in charitable and other community service organizations.

The finalists also had to show that they have the qualities needed to be an ambassador and each had to be worthy of being emulated by the young people of the Cayman Islands.

The final phase of deciding the recipient of the 2006 Young Caymanian Leadership Award involves a taped interview of each finalist.

The winner will be the finalists who scores highest overall. He or she won’t be named until the award ceremony at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

It is wonderful that 19 people were worthy of consideration for this prestigious award.

It proves that there are young men and women in our community who take their positions in society responsibly.

These people are well grounded and everyone else could do well to observe them and learn from how they interact with all facets of society.

If we all emulated the way these finalists live their lives the Cayman Islands would be so much the better for it.

Putting these finalists on a pedestal is the right thing to do. We hope that the younger of our youths look up to these young people and adopt some of their good habits.

Congratulations to all 19 who were nominated and good luck to the five who are in the running for the 2006 award.
