Downtown plywood structure ‘unsightly’

Some residents are complaining that renovations along Harbour Drive in George Town have the waterfront area looking like a shanty town.

Rotten plywood placed along the storefronts is being used to protect pedestrians and to block the view of construction.

The unkempt plywood, splashed with white wash runs the length of the walkway from the stop light on the corner of Harbour Drive to Breezes by the Bay restaurant. The site welcomes cruise ship passengers from the minute the ships pull into the harbour.

The construction site is located next to one of Cayman’s most historical buildings and tourist attractions, the Cayman Islands National Museum.

As to what it is doing to businesses behind the barrier, Charlie Adams, store manager of Artifacts said it has not impacted his business in any way, but he could not say for the other stores in the complex.

Mr. Adams said he was told that the buildings’ owners were doing repairs to the roof.

‘As to why the contractors chose to use old plywood, I have no clue. But it does look a bit unsightly,’ he said.

When the Compass contacted the owner of DRG Construction he said he had no comment and all queries should be forwarded to his attorney Charles Adams.

Mr. Adams told the Compass that the primary concern was to make sure that no one was injured during the remodelling.

He said the plywood is only temporary and workers hope, if weather permits, to have the structure removed sometime this week.
