Cayman’s own race car, with Donnie Neuenberger at the wheel, made a big splash at Daytona’s first Busch NASCAR race of the season this weekend. In the Cayman Islands branded car #58, Donnie finished 23rd in Cayman’s first every NASCAR appearance. The Cayman car had been as high as 4th at one point until some late paint trading with Greg Biffle led to a multi-car accident late in the race. Even after the involvement in the crash, Donnie was able to bounce back for a very impressive finish in a race in which Tony Stewart went on to take the checkered flag in the Hershey’s Kissables 300 in front of a crowd of 100,000 spectators at the Daytona International Speedway.
The Cayman business team of Arch Automotive and Spectrum Promotions Services sponsoring the car was delighted at the result. “The Busch race at Daytona was a great start to this innovative partnership,” said Michelle Arch of Arch Automotive, The race was full of action with three-wide racing, a record number of crashes and guys trading paint all day long.”
Spectrum Promotions owner David Martins said the public relations result for Cayman was “tremendous”. “We’re proud of what Donnie and that whole team achieved in this first Cayman appearance. For the Cayman Islands team to go to NASCAR for the first time and do this well, they deserve a lot of credit. These guys are totally devoted to promoting the Cayman Islands.”
Michelle Arch, who attended the race said, “This is a very proud moment. The Cayman Islands car was a huge hit with the media as well as the loyal fans of NASCAR. Instead of the regular pit gear, the crew wore Cayman Islands shirts and hats that I brought them. It was a media frenzy.”
Future plans for #58 include an appearance at another NASCAR event later in the year. Eventually, miniatures of the Cayman Islands car, in full colour, will be on sale locally drawing on the spectator interest in NASCAR.
