Bermuda premier tours schools

Local students had the opportunity to question – and impress – the Premier of Bermuda, William Alexander Scott on Monday.

Education Minister Alden McLaughlin, along with other officials, accompanied the premier and his wife, Mrs. Olga Scott, on tours of Prospect Primary and John Gray High schools, said a GIS press release.

Prospect’s Principal Michael Walker led the officials into each classroom for brief introductions. Premier Scott said he was delighted by the polite manner in which the students rose to their feet and greeted the group.

Teachers in each class prepared their students for the premier’s visit by researching Bermuda’s history, and some students were prepared to ask questions.

Students in the Year Five Murray class asked about Bermuda’s policy on limiting car ownership to one car per household, and questioned whether people riding on buses were peaceful. Six-year-old students in the Year 3 Bravo class asked the premier the name of Bermuda’s National Anthem. Answer: ‘God Save the Queen’ (National Anthem) and ‘Hail to Bermuda’ (National Song).

Principal Walker also showed the premier the Merit Room, where students can cash in the points they earn for good behaviour.

Mr. Walker pointed out that the concept had spread to four other schools on the island and was a project fully funded by the private sector.

‘This is very impressive, since it rewards children every day for good conduct,’ the premier said. He later joked to the group, ‘I wonder if this honour system would work with our Cabinet members?’

At John Gray High School the premier was greeted by Principal Debbie McLaughlin. He was taken on a tour of the school grounds and classes in art, practical food technology, and information technology, the release said.
