Marilyn Conolly, acting chief officer of the Ministry for Health and Human Services, delivered a speech on behalf of Minister Anthony Eden, who is attending the Panama trade mission.

‘International Women’s Day is about celebrating acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in women’s history,’ she said.

Tammy Ebanks-Bishop, WRC programme manager, unveiled the poster, which outlines significant dates spanning almost 50 years for women in Cayman.

‘The dates of events that you see on this poster reflect some, but I dare not say all, of the significant milestones that have been accomplished in the Cayman Islands by women and for women.

‘Every one of these blocks represented here is an important milestone in the development of women in the Cayman Islands and the world. However, the one that is a red circle that says, ‘You are here 2006’ is the most important date of all.

‘That is because you here – all of us – have the ability to improve the situation for women in the Cayman Islands and indeed the world by starting with ourselves,’ she said.

In addition, as part of Honouring Women Month, the WRC has organised special events to run throughout March.

Included in the line-up are a 5K walk/run on Saturday, 11 March; poetry, photo and essay competitions; and panel discussions to be held at various schools.
