Fast times in Cable and Wireless race

Perfect conditions set the stage for blistering times in the water during last Saturday’s Cable & Wireless 800m sea swim. 102 swim enthusiasts took part in the 19th annual running of the event, which was the first open water swim on the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Associations’ 2006 calendar.

The members of Cayman’s 2006 CARIFTA swim team proved that they are in competition form as CARIFTA team-members Joel Rombough, Brett Fraser, Brigitte Tomascik and Michael Lockwood rounded out the top-four finishing positions overall, each completing the race in under 10 minutes. The husband and wife team of David MacDonald and Jeanine Rix were the first male and female Masters swimmers across the line.

With a favourable current, most of the swimmers enjoyed personal best times, including Bobbie Lawrence, 87, who completed the race in an unbelievable 22 minutes 17 seconds to win the 60+ female age group. Cable & Wireless representative Andrea Fa’amoe was on hand to award gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three finishers in each age group.

The next swim on the Open Water Calendar is the Butterfield Bank 800m Sea Swim, scheduled for 4pm on Saturday, May 20th, held in support of the local charity Cayman Loves Children.
