Stride Against Cancer heads to the Brac

The Cayman Islands Cancer Society is staging the first-ever Sister Islands Stride Against Cancer next month in Cayman Brac.

Set for Saturday, 1 April, the fun run/walk starts at the Brac Reef Resort at 7am.

In conjunction with the Stride event there will be a Cancer Awareness Symposium to be hosted by the Brac Reef.

Participants in the Stride Against Cancer Walk have a choice of walking or running either a 5K or 10K distance. The 5K course is from the Brac Reef Resort to just past Aunt Sha’s and back to the Brac Reef. Participants in the 100K event will do the course twice. There will be an aid station at both Brac Reef and at the turnaround point by Aunt Sha’s.

Organisers are encouraging the community to come out and support this non-competitive event.

Registration is $10 and the first 100 people to register will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

All proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing a state-of-the-art digital mammogram machine for the Cayman Islands Hospital on Grand Cayman. Residents of the Sister Islands must travel to Grand Cayman for mammograms.

Following the Stride events, refreshments will be available and there will be a series of presentations beginning at 9am. Topics include prostate cancer screening with Dr. S. Velusamy, surgeon at Faith Hospital, and cervical cancer screening with Dr. Bonigi Venkamma, the gynaecologist at Faith Hospital.

In addition, Christine Sanders of the Cancer Society will talk about breast cancer awareness and David Bennett, a testicular cancer survivor, will share his story. There is no charge for people wishing to attend the presentations only.

Registration for the walk will be held Thursday, 30 March at the Brac Reef from 7:30pm to 9pm. Participants can also register on the morning of the event at the Brac Reef beginning at 6:30am. There will be several prizes for participants including a special banner to be presented to the school with the most students registered.

The weekend is sponsored in part by Baptist Health South Florida, Brac Reef Resort, Progressive Distributors, Rotary Club of Cayman Brac and Sagicor.
