With Father’s Day coming up this weekend, it is important to remember that men deserve to be pampered too.
The Silver Rain Spa at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman offers numerous services for gentlemen.
More and more men now receive spa treatments, which is wonderful, said Hefina Rees, Lead Aesthetician at Silver Rain Spa. ‘Men need to take care of themselves just as much as women.’
Men, of course, also enjoy the relaxation of the experience as much as women do. At the Silver Rain Spa, there is a separate Men’s Sanctuary where gentlemen can change, use the hot tub, sauna or steam room facilities and are served only by gentlemen.
It seems that men have their own reasons for needing spa services. ‘Men who work in jobs where presentation is central, such as lawyers or in business tend to come in more,’ said Ms Rees. ‘It is important for them to maintain their image.’
Of course, spa services are not just about image. ‘Men’s skin has the same needs as women’s skin. Many men come in and have their first facial with us, but afterwards wonder why they waited so long!’ exclaimed Ms Rees.
When doing a gentleman’s facial as opposed to a woman’s, Ms Rees said the difference is minimal. ‘The skin problems are largely the same, but men shave and don’t wear make-up.’ Their shaving habits can lead to problems with ingrown hairs, which can require special exfoliation, as well as drier skin around the beard areas.
Make-up is not as problematic for the skin as many consider it to be. In fact, it can actually act as a barrier to environmental toxins. In this way, the fact that men don’t wear make-up means they can often suffer from skin problems more than women.
‘Make-up can actually help the skin a lot,’ said Ms Rees. ‘It’s just that you must remove it before bed, otherwise you will develop skin problems.’
Men often tend to ignore the skin more in terms of caring for it on a daily basis, mentioned Ms Rees.
‘Men don’t tend to take care of their skin as much at home as women do,’ stated Ms Rees. ‘So when they come into the spa, a facial really helps to calm their skin. Shaving is harsh and their skin can often be dehydrated.’
Men may not take as much care at home because they are unsure which products they can buy. However, Ms Rees confirmed that men can use any product from any line as long as it matches their skin type.
‘They can use what they may consider to be women’s products. It’s just that the packaging doesn’t always appeal to them.’
Men often don’t take the time to relax, either. A day or an afternoon at the Silver Rain Spa would soon fix that.
There are specific services available for men, but all are customised according to the individual needs of the client. ‘We have two specific facials for men, but we do customise them also,’ declared Ms Rees.
The Heads-Up Deep Cleansing Facial for men is a 60-minute long treatment that involves an exfoliating and deep cleansing treatment that helps to rid the face of dead skin cells and to assist in taking care of the ingrown hairs that may result from shaving.
The Cellular Hydrating Facial for men can be 30 or 60 minutes long. Its key components include a massage to encourage detoxification and intense moisturising to smooth and soothe the skin.
All facials are subject to change once the initial skin consultation has been done, however. ‘If a man has very sensitive skin, we’ll do our Anti-Redness facial on them to calm the skin,’ explained Ms Rees. The possibilities are endless depending on each individual’s skin make-up.
