The Health Services is making an urgent appeal for blood donors.
‘For anyone who has ever considered becoming a blood donor, we are asking you to turn the thought into action and make your first donation today,’ Laboratory Services Manager Joan Terry said in a press release.
‘The time is now. Those who have given in the past are encouraged to schedule an appointment to once again give the gift of life during this time of critical need.’
Ms Terry noted that there has been a steady decline of donors coming forward over the last three years. This has worsened since Hurricane Ivan with many of the regular donors leaving the island.
The steady reduction in the blood donor pool has significantly affected the level of available blood supply, she said.
‘With a community as close-knit as ours, chances are that everyone will know someone that requires blood at least once in their lifetime . . . it is important to have adequate supplies at all times to ensure that a life is saved.’
If you are between the ages of 18 and 60 and in general good health, you are invited to enrol as a blood donor. Please contact the Blood Bank at the Cayman Islands Hospital at 244-2674 or 244-2669.
