Watch what you say

Please allow me space in your paper to express my increasing concerns about recent discussions on a particular morning radio talk show concerning Islam whether it be the radical arm or the mainstream religion.

Recently the Pope himself had to apologise to the Muslim world for statements he made concerning their religion; he claims he was misunderstood. His effigy was burned in many cities, a 70-year-old nun was shot and killed and protests continue. He has now met with ambassadors from various Islamic countries in an attempt to placate their rage.

This particular talk show associates those negative remarks as outrage over Muslims treatment of women, a noble sentiment, but to repeatedly call these people monsters on a radio station that is on the Internet is not a very wise move in a country that depends for on stability for its livelihood

Recently a senior police officer was on the front page of a local publication saying that Cayman Islands is subject to terrorist attack. Indeed many of us believe we may have a terrorist cell here already masquerading as refugees from Afghanistan.

Should there be even one terrorist attack here we would take years to recover. Our financial situation will not allow us to spend $400 million on antiterrorist measures, which will in any case destroy whatever tourist industry we may have left.

In addition to the Islam issue, the talk show host also takes aim on Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. Neither of these gentlemen probably ever spoke the word ‘Cayman’ in their entire life.

I was once told that cockroach has no business in cockfight.

I would defend anyone’s right to discuss any subject in any forum but unfortunately in today’s world one has to conduct one’s affairs with common sense. Especially when one is at the same time flying the US flag by word and deed. One should remember that the greatest threat to the Cayman Islands so far, apart from global warming, has been the United States Government financial regulations. Thank God for their tourists.
