Travel agents awarded

Cayman travel agents enjoyed an educational day on board the biggest cruise ship in the world Wednesday, and were awarded for their sales efforts last year.

A&A Tours, which bookings for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruises go through, presented plaques to the Cayman Islands’ most outstanding sales performers for 2005 on board Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.

Accepting the award for first place on behalf of International Travel was travel consultant Yolanda Smith who said it felt very good to receive the top award.

‘I love booking cruises,’ she smiled. ‘Once you sell a cruise you know it is all inclusive and the clients can totally relax and enjoy themselves,’ she said.

Ms Smith noted that taking a cruise vacation is very popular amongst the residents of the Cayman Islands.

Accepting the award for second place was Mindy Scott Hennings, General Manager, on behalf of Cayman Travel Services.

In third place was Travel Pros, with the award accepted by travel specialist Denise Birmingham.

In all there were about 16 travel partners and guests that went on board Freedom of the Seas. They enjoyed a presentation from A&A Tours on vacations they offer, lunch on board and a tour of the giant cruise ship.

Giving a quick run-down on Royal Caribbean cruises, A&A’s Amarie Serrano noted that these cruises attract mostly those in the 30 to 59 year-old age group. Some of the exclusive features offered on board these ships are the rock climbing wall, surf rider machine, boxing ring and ice skating rinks.

Royal Caribbean has itineraries available from three to 15 nights.

The cruise line’s Liberty of the Seas is expected to make her debut in Miami in May 2007 and, at 160,000 tons, the 3,643-passenger vessel will share ‘world’s biggest cruise ship’ honours with sister ship, Freedom of the Seas.

In 2009 Royal Caribbean is set to unveil the biggest ship ever, at 220,000 tons, Project Genesis will accommodate as many as 5,400 passengers.

Ms Serrano also spoke about Celebrity Cruises, a five star product.

The guest profile on these ships is that of savvy or seasoned travellers, she said.

One of its feats is that Condé Nast Traveler Magazine gave four Celebrity ships the top four places in rating the big ship category.
